What is SugarCane Publishing?

Pioneering a New Wave of Diverse Narratives in Publishing.

Sugarcane Publishing stands as a beacon of diversity in an ocean of sameness. As a rarity among publishing houses—minority-owned and boldly ambitious—we embrace the mission to bring forth contemporary literature that mirrors the rich tapestry of our world: multicultural, multiracial, multi-sexual, and non-normative.

In our role as an innovative hybrid independent publisher, Sugarcane Publishing weaves together the best of two worlds. We uphold the tradition of publishing high-quality books, while also forging partnerships with our authors, encouraging their active involvement in the production, distribution, and marketing journey.

Our roots lie deep in the pursuit of literary freedom. Founders Kristina & Aaron Liburd crafted Sugarcane Publishing as a vessel to control the quality of their creations and connect their books with the readers who will cherish them. Recognizing the lack of representation in the publishing industry, they resolved to be the change, giving life to Sugarcane Publishing.

Today, Sugarcane Publishing is more than a publishing house. It is a declaration of our commitment to amplify diverse voices and narratives. Each page turned, each story told, each author's voice we bring to the fore, is a stride towards a more inclusive and understanding world. Together, we turn the tide in publishing, one extraordinary book at a time.

What's a Hybrid Publisher?

And how does it compare to a Traditional Publisher?

At Sugarcane Publishing, we welcome every manuscript, whether it comes accompanied by an agent's approval or arrives from a fledgling author. Our core editorial group (CEG) examines each submission, ensuring every voice has a chance to be heard.

This approach distinguishes us as a hybrid publisher. Unlike a traditional publisher, we explore every possibility for forging a business relationship with our authors. Our objective is to find the most suitable avenue for each unique book and its creator. This might take the shape of a conventional publishing deal or evolve into a partnership agreement where the author contributes to the cost of publishing.

Once our CEG has meticulously reviewed a submission, we propose the most suitable pathway for that specific work. Our priority is to lay the groundwork for a fruitful, long-lasting relationship that satisfies both us and the author—we're in this together!

Regardless of whether we extend a conventional or partnership deal, we hold all of our authors in equal regard. Once you've joined us, you are a Sugarcane Publishing author—embraced in our commitment to diverse voices and exceptional storytelling.
